Miley Cyrus became a TV star at the age of 13 as the title character in the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. Cyrus is the oldest daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus, who topped the charts in 1992 with “Achy Breaky Heart.” Miley began performing at an early age, and by the age of 9 was embarking on a professional career. Prior to Hannah Montana, she had a mere handful of jobs, most notably a small part in Tim Burton’s Big Fish (2003). After a series of auditions that began when she was 11, Cyrus landed the lead role of Hannah Montana, a teen pop star who leads a double life as an average schoolgirl. Her dad, Billy Ray, was then chosen to play her widowed father in the TV series, and the entire Cyrus family moved from Nashville, Tennessee to southern California to encourage Miley’s career.
The instant success of her television series led to a record deal for Cyrus, whose singing voice is often featured in the show. In October of 2006 the soundtrack to Hannah Montana, featuring eight songs by Miley and a duet with her father, debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top 200 chart. The album Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus was released in 2007 and also debuted at number one.
Later that year, Miley embarked on her first nationwide tour, The Best of Both Worlds Tour, with opening act: The Jonas Brothers. The tour sparked notice of Miley Cyrus as the new Teen Queen by causing sold out concert venues all over the country and having kids desperately trying to attend the tour. The unbelievable attention on the concert tour brought fame to Miley from outside of the Disney-fan community.
Early 2008 brought Miley the breakup of her relationship with Nick Jonas (former opening act), a successful commercial single (See You Again, Meet Miley Cyrus), and a controversial spread for Vanity Fair by Annie Leibovitz. All bringing her celebrity to new heights.
With Miley Cyrus being a new “paparazzi subject,” she began filming Hannah Montana: The Movie in May of 2008. As summer 2008 began, Miley was beginning to prepare for the release of her sophomore album: Breakout. The album’s first single, 7 Things, was released in May 2008 on Radio Disney. The song, early on, was suspected of being about former boyfriend and new found popstar Nick Jonas of The Jonas Brothers. Breakout was released on July 22, 2008 at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. The album was recorded, promoted, and regarded as a Miley Cyrus production. It is the first album Miley has released with no relation or acknowledgement to her TV Show as character Hannah Montana. The rest of the summer brought Miley more success and more fun.

Fall 2008 came with Season 3 of Hannah Montana premiering on the Disney Channel and Miley’s 16th birthday. Miley threw an amazing Sweet 16 birthday bash at Disneyland on October 5, 2008. Widely covered by the media, it was one birthday party Miley will never forget. Thanksgiving day, Miley’s first animated movie, Bolt, was released in theaters; later becoming an Oscar nominated film. As the year drew to an end, Miley remained in the public eye. As an end-of-year celebration, Miley joined forces with MTV for a New Years’ Eve bash.
Miley Cyrus is currently the top of the teen celebrity hierarchy. With 2009 giving Miley her first full-length feature film (Hannah Montana: The Movie) opening at #1 in its first weekend, more fame, and an autobiographical book (Miles to Go) – she won’t be losing her top spot. She is the new Teen Queen and with time and effort, Miley will continue to be a star as she gets older.
